PSAT (National Merit Qualifying Test) Merit awards are given to all NMQT qualifiers, runners up, contenders and finalists. These merit awards are based solely on the performance on the PSAT taken the third Saturday in October of the junior year and are given regardless of need or family income. These awards are typically matched by other merit awards, e.g. Ford Foundation, Carnigie Foundation etc. Additionally, most colleges and universities consider National Merit candidates before viewing other applicants.
Each year most colleges and universities award the following categories of merit scholarships to freshman candidates with outstanding academic standing and SAT scores. Most schools will automatically consider you for a scholarship at the time of your admission. These scores are based on the Critical Reading and Math Sections totaling 1600.
(Most Colleges and Universities are primarily considering the Critical Reading and Math Sections; however the Writing Section should to be consistent with the scores in the Critical Reading and Math Sections).
